MEANING AND PURPOSE

Each basket tells a story. The stories of the Rwandan women who have intricately handcrafted these baskets from sweet grass and the leaves of the agave sisal plant. The intricate designs and flawless work of an experienced weaver is never the result of luck. Rather, Rwandan women owe their skills to the women before them who passed on the knowledge from generation to generation—mother to daughter, grandmother to child. Each piece is unique, culturally and traditionally inspired, and handwoven in intimate Rwandan communities. With differing patterns and colors, one or more of these baskets will make a globally conscious and stylistic addition to your home.

Our 6" basket can be used as a decorative piece, a place to display jewelry, store herbs in the kitchen, or even to hold your car keys and extra change lying around. Meaningfully and purposefully designed, each basket has a woven loop that allows you to hang it up on the wall as a decorative piece.

Design
Dancer

The bold, pointed pattern on the dancer basket conjures the full, sharp movements and brilliant costumes of East African dancers spinning to a drummer's beat.

Both Rwanda and Uganda have rich traditions of celebrations that involve music and dance. But traditional East African dances go beyond entertainment; they often celebrate first fruits, and unmarried Rwandan youth dance the ikinimba as part of a courtship ritual; the dance's flowing arm movements show off the women's beautiful grace.

Similarly, in Uganda, young women dance the lakaraka. "It has often been said that everyone dances in Africa, and that Africa is the festival continent. In fact, an African proverb says that if you can talk, you can sing. And if you can walk, you can dance." - Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda
