The "OG" basket that started it all.

Classic and timeless - the large sisal bowl was the first basket KAZI started carrying. These versatile woven baskets are the perfect size. Style the statement basket on a shelf for additional organization in your living room, add it to your coffee table for a globally inspired feel, or use it as a serving bowl for your favorite fruit. Or, use the basket as storage for keys and mail on your entryway furniture. Most commonly, we find the loop on the back makes this gorgeous piece of wall art ready to hang.

This will soon become your favorite decorative piece in your home.

  • Approximately 12” D x 4” H
  • Fair Trade
  • Made in Rwanda
  • Products are made from all natural fibers of sisal and sweetgrass
  • Organic dyes are used to dye the sisal
  • Profiled weaver tag is attached to each product
  • Baskets have a hang loop on the back for wall décor - ready to hang

*All products are made by hand with love and vary slightly in color and size.

Made of the highest quality natural sisal fibers in an ethical, fair trade environment. Sisal is wound stitch by stitch around a small sweet grass bundle. Handwoven by a woman in remote regions of Rwanda.

Care Instructions:
  • Made of natural fibers and grass; do not submerge in water.
  • If necessary, use a damp cloth to wipe or spot clean the basket.
  • After serving bread or other dried foods, turn the product upside down: shake and tap to release crumbs and residue.
  • Avoid using chemicals or detergents.
Sun and fading
  • Due to being all natural fibers, keep dyed products out of direct sunlight for long periods of time to avoid natural fading.
  • All natural products with little or no coloring do well in direct sunlight.
  • Avoid temperature changes when possible.
  • If products are being stored for more than 2 weeks, please keep in a temperature controlled environment, elevated off of a concrete floor to avoid fluctuating cold and warm temperatures that could create mold.

Meaning & Purpose

The intricate designs and flawless work of an experienced weaver is never the result of luck. Rather, Rwandan women owe their skills to the women before them who passed on the knowledge from generation to generation—mother to daughter, grandmother to child. As young weavers learn from their elders, they quickly realize the weaving process is a painstaking one. Passing on basket weaving to young women carries the weight of upholding a time-honored practice and an age-old rite of passage. Baskets decorate nearly every Rwandan home, for they are one of the most important symbols of family, friendship, good fortune, and proud cultural heritage.

Kazi exists to create fair living wages, good working conditions and market access for artisans.  Some might call this “fair trade”, we call it good business.

We are the first of 5 companies to receive the highly regarded Nest Seal. Every year we undergo an onsite audit in each country and with each cooperative to earn the right to mark our products with this important seal.

When you see the Nest Seal you have the confidence to know products have been ethically handcrafted in a home or small workshop. This means fair wages are paid, good working conditions are provided, there are no children or forced labor in the workforce, materials are traced and fairly sourced and all aspects of the production and material processes (like dyeing) are in consideration of the environment and safe working environments.

Fantastic decorative piece with sustainable origins

I received this 12 inch woven bowl as part of the Stellar Testing Panel, and it’s quickly found a special place in my living room. I use it on my side table as a place to hold coasters, keys, or other trinkets. The colors are so vibrant, but don’t look fake or tacky at all! Very natural. The bowl is excellent quality — it definitely seems like something you would find at an artisanal market, not just from any home goods store. I especially appreciate Kazi’s commitment to sustainable and ethical production, as that is something that means a lot to me when considering my purchases. I will definitely buy from them in the future! Overall, very satisfied.

Gorgeous Bowl!

I love this beautifully made bowl! The craftsmanship is stellar and it’s a very sturdy bowl that can be used for numerous things. I will likely use it with added decor in my kids’ playroom. The colors are soft and fun. This is definitely a bowl we’ll have that will last for years! Also, the mission behind Kazi gives me even more reason to love them. I love a brand that gives back! I did receive this bowl as a part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel.

Decorative and Functional Bowl

I was given this 12" woven bowl to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel. It is lovely as either a functional or decorative piece. It can be hung on a wall, but the loop doesn’t interfere if it’s flat on a table. The craftsmanship is great. I keep it on my coffee table as a landing zone for remotes. I love the vivid colors and rich texture. The fibers had a strong smell when I first received the bowl, but the smell dissipated after a week or so. I would absolutely recommend this bowl to someone looking for an eye-catching pop of color.
