HANDWOVEN IN RWANDA

The three-line pattern on this basket is known as the “unity” design and symbolizes the three ethnic groups that divided Rwanda in 1994, but who now work together to heal wounds from the past. Weavers heal through the collective effort of working toward the same purpose and goal: to create beauty with their own hands.

This heat resistant trivet is perfect to set a tea kettle on or hot dish from the oven. With a woven loop attached on the back, they can be hung up as wall decor for a globally inspired feel.

Specifications:
  • Approximately 10” D x 0.5” H
  • Made in Rwanda
  • Product is made from all natural fibers of sisal and sweet grass
  • Organic dyes are used to dye the sisal
  • Profiled weaver tag is attached to each product
  • Trivet has a hang loop on the back for wall décor
  • Safe to use with food

*All products are made by hand with love and vary slightly in color and size.

Made only in an ethical, fair trade environment. Handwoven by a cooperative of women located in Rwanda, this one of kind piece takes weeks to complete.

Care Instructions:

Cleaning the handmade products - Made of natural fibers and grass; do not submerge in water. If necessary, use a damp cloth to wipe or spot clean the basket. After serving bread or other dried foods, turn the product upside down and shake and tap to release crumbs and residue. Avoid using chemicals or detergents.

Sun and fading - Due to being all natural fibers, keep dyed products out of direct sunlight for long periods of time to avoid natural fading. All natural products with little or no coloring do well in direct sunlight.

Avoid moisture or temperate changes when possible - If products are being stored for more than 2 weeks, please keep in a temperature controlled environment, elevated off of a concrete floor to avoid fluctuating cold and warm temperatures that could create mold.

Meaning & Purpose:

These delicately textured and handcrafted trivets were made by groups of women in intimate communities across Rwanda. They use the sisal agave plant and sweet grass to weave them together.

Kazi exists to create fair living wages, good working conditions and market access for artisans.  Some might call this “fair trade”, we call it good business.

We are the first of 5 companies to receive the highly regarded Nest Seal. Every year we undergo an onsite audit in each country and with each cooperative to earn the right to mark our products with this important seal.

When you see the Nest Seal you have the confidence to know products have been ethically handcrafted in a home or small workshop. This means fair wages are paid, good working conditions are provided, there are no children or forced labor in the workforce, materials are traced and fairly sourced and all aspects of the production and material processes (like dyeing) are in consideration of the environment and safe working environments.

Great material and style

I received the product through the Stellar Product Testing Panel and it is so beautiful! It’s very thick and you can tell it’s really well made. The design, the style and material went beautifully with what I already had in my house and the material was really nice. Kazi's commitment to sustainability, supporting artisans, and fair wages is a really big deal to me too because I know it’s supports the same values I have. Overall, I loved it and enjoy having it on display.

A beautiful piece of table art!

I received this Kazi 10” table plate from the Stellar Product Testing Panel. The first thing I noticed is how incredibly well-made and beautiful it is! The craftsmanship is amazing, and it looks lovely against my wooden table. The attached card says that the trivet was made by Christine from Rwanda, whose wages are helping her make improvements to her home and save money to send her kids to school. I was touched by Christine’s story, and struck by how it closely resembles my own. Meeting the needs of our families, safe and comfortable housing, and education are common goals no matter the community or circumstances we were born into. As I read Kazi’s mission statements, I was impressed by how this company not only sells beautiful handmade goods to a ready market in wealthy nations, but does so in a way that offers dignity and a living wage to the artisans. This is a mission I can get behind. Thank you for the opportunity to test this table plate, and introducing me to a company I feel great about supporting!

Sturdy and well-made!

When I opened this 10" decorative table plate, I was pleasantly surprised at how solidly it is made. It is woven very tightly and smoothly, so it lays completely flat and feels as though it will be very durable. The texture is pleasant both to look at and to feel. It is a lovely addition to my table decor for autumn, but could easily be used year-round. It would be a unique gift to share with a hostess, or to use as a raffle prize. My favorite aspect of this item is that it really was made in Africa. Knowing that each purchase helps a woman to support her family makes me smile. It even has a faint scent of grassses, which is such a nice, authentic touch. I have never traveled overseas, but having a bit of African artistry here in my midwestern United States home is pretty special. Thank you to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for letting me try this decorative table plate!

Beautiful piece of art

I received this product through the Stellar Product Testing Panel, and couldn’t be more excited to check it out. The colors are so beautiful, the smell is so earthy and the most awesome thing is to learn that it was made by a beautiful, powerful woman named Christine, who can feed and clothe her children by doing this for All Across Africa. I have already used this several times as a plate to serve my Madeleines or to put a hot pot.
